I happen to know that similarly to most cameras, the current Nikon superzooms also have a hidden diagnostics mode in their firmwares. Among other stuff, that includes RAW output, which is something I would really like to see. The question is, are there others who would be interested to try to do some digging/testing to find out how to get there? And furthermore, are there any good guesses or pointers on how it could be enabled?

The only public and very useful development I know is CHDK, and as far as I know it was possible because Canon agreed to cooperate to that software. If the current CoolPix models work similarly to most other cameras, it is highly likely accessing the diagnostics mode doesn't need any software changes, but rather pressing the right keys or putting the right files to the SD card. So in a way things that one could either do even accidentally or by putting in an SD card somebody could have 'booby trapped' with the correct trigger files. These should be things for which Nikon has built some sort of protections that make sure you at least won't brick the camera without some sort of confirming actions (like actually using items on the diagnostic menu that would be shown). So in my opinion risks should be pretty minimal as long as one does not mess with the firmware file contents. And as said before, I don't believe that is actually necessary, at least as far as accessing the diagnostics mode and RAW output goes. I am aware of that site and it can indeed be very useful. As you said, they only deal with DSLRs, and based on a couple of discussion threads there, do not seem to have any interest in compacts. Coolpix models however share some dna with those DSLRs so at least some of the information and tools might be applicable.
